Men’s – Spongy Denim. Julien David AW16

_ARC0205

Julien David never, but never dissapoints to deliver the most exciting fabrics and textures for his menswear collections. Spongy denim. Do you feel it? ‘Cause I do. Utilitarian jump-suits, blazers, pants, coats – I want to have nearly every single piece from autumn-winter 2016 collection, made of this fabulously durable, warp-faced cotton textile. Moreover, this collection is inspired with Akira, a dystopian anime film from 1988, set in futuristic Tokyo. No wonder why Japan, and its modernistic approach, is constantly appearing on Julien’s mind – all of his clothes, for both men and women, are manufactured in Japan. Except the sharp, aluminum spikes on models’ heads, the collection didn’t directly show the stereotypical, bold nature of anime characters; to a big extend, it was all about a comforting neutrality. And whatever they say about the prosperity and functionality of high-tech textiles, David believes denim will still rule in the future.

London in Brazil. Marques Almeida Resort’16

marques-almeida-042-1366

After winning the LVMH Prize, Marques Almeida quickly updated their brand schedule, by introducing a new season to it – Resort. And for their first Resort, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida went to Brazil with their muse, Sofia, to photograph and present it. The effects? A collection of wearable clothes, which have a very specific MA signature. Special denim tops with ruffles; grungy silhouettes; bold colours. And lovely dresses which were styled in unusually elegant way. Loose-weave light knits were slashed and knotted just like their tattered  T-shirts, which came reinvented here as beachwear. Digital jungle-print silks and florals were a clash of femininity and the typical rawness Marques Almeida has in its codes. It is worth to mention, that going to Brazil was worth it – the clothes looked really laid-back and the lookbook will definitely catch your eye.

Colorful Volumes. Marques Almeida AW15

MARC0105

Marques Almeida is super cute this season. The rising-star label shows off with their signature denim, but also brings a lot of new “things” – bright knitted dresses, brocade and fur (possibly faux) and polished leather accessories. Models marched to the no-nonsense sounds of Bjork’s 1995 “Army of Me”, their hair hanging in undone grungy locks. The attitude reminded me of Corinne Day’s photography from the 90’s, “It was a lot about those shoots where you would have these really expensive garments with a wrecked sofa” said Paulo Almeida. The final result? A very #funkyoffish collection. It’s cute and it definitely stole the hearts of London fashionistas.
