No fuss, more impact. As always out of schedule, but with friends and cozy atmosphere, Alaia presented his new collection, that is the first one after his recent Musee Galliera exhibition. And, it was totally Alaia. Nothing mind-breaking, but only, and only, class and elegance. Leather, pony hair, knitted body dresses, hooded gowns… and everything kept in toned colours. Mainly, Alaïa stuck to subtle silhouette updates, offering a roomier V-neck jumper and adding a rectangular fringe—occasionally knotted—to the edge of his skirts to give them a fresh swish in place of his typical flounce. A technique he dubbed “Religieuse” combined larger organ pleats with interior accordion pleats, and on a floor-grazing skirt or a truncated cape, the result was something akin to seeing Sister in the corner office. Indeed, with the recurrence of all those starched white poplin shirts, Alaïa further confirmed how his view of femininity has shifted since his heyday of cleavage-bearing necklines.

Sew On. Vika Gazinskaya AW14

Well… The most interesting Russian designer, Vika Gazinskya, just went out of ideas. Sorry, but sew-on-badges embroidered on caps and dresses look a bit… Home-made? But not hand-made- rather “sewn because I was bored”. And these trompe l’oil printed dresses and blouses? So Maison Martin Margiela. Even those “tattoos” look deja vu (see Viktor & Rolf Haute Couture for Summer). I thought that Vika was the only future of Russian fashion. But, unfortunately, as you may see, she is getting traumatically boring about her ideas. And that’s a pitty.
Big Girls Need Big Diamonds.
And this quote by Elizabeth Taylor defines best Celine’s AW14 jewellery- it’s big, shiny and it’s everywhere. Worn on sweaters, with dresses and as one-ear-earring, Phoebe Philo got splendour this season, if talking about the bling-bling. In reality, the designers go big this time with all those necklaces- Altuzarra had a huge metallic compositions tied around the necks; Givenchy gave coral branches; and Louis Vuitton (just like Celine) was all about the one-ear-earring, with a huge LV logo. And while it’s the International Women Day- the bigger bling, the bigger wow!
