Miuccia’s Warm Days

When it’s sweltering hot on the streets and you dream of a cold splash of water… then take a look at Miuccia Prada‘s spring-summer 2009 collection for her main-line. Thank me later for this breezy throwback…

Like taken out of a classical, Italian film, the shameless femininity in this collection, filled with crinkled fabrics, pencil skirts and seashell earrings, brings the musings of a warm, summer night. The poetry behind this beautiful collection is kept in the intriguing manner of the clothes – dress’ straps and short jackets looked as if they were about to fall down off the models’ bodies. “It’s primitive,” Prada said, “going back to what counts.” Surely, this collection has counts like no other in 2016. And definitely, it can be taken as a good tip this summer!

Reflections on Taste. Miu Miu AW16

_MON0555

Although we’ve had the newcomers (Jasmine Sanders, Julia Banas), hot faces of Anna Cleveland and Edie Campbell type, Insta-fames (Gigi and Kendall) and the top-models, so the one-and-only Adriana Lima and Lara Stone, the Miu Miu girls were as nutty as the old ladies you meet on the street, and with whom you wouldn’t truly fancy a date. However, there was something appealing about these girls, wearing layered denim and furniture-tapestry maxi-skirts. As if Miuccia Prada wanted to show the risky, yet very feminine way of dressing, which is based on mixing contrasting, old and slightly cheesy clothes… but out of necessity, and not because of a current trend. Corduroy bombers and denim jackets with lace collars had something of a college girl memoirs – all of the jackets were embroidered with models’ boyfriend name tags. A nod to teenage romance, or a real-life tendency of sharing your wardrobe in a relationship?

But the youthful spirit of Prada’s sister line becomes much more mature, and less likely to feel appealing to a younger clientele. The lilac dress, worn by Lara, had the Cafe Marchesi florals everywhere, while the old-fashioned Jacquard coats and velvet belts smelled with Parisian thrift shops. These clothes are nostalgic and frivolous, and the entire collection questions good-taste. Although it was mostly slammed by the critics, I liked it.

Miu Miu always makes me feel relaxed by the end of the fashion month. With exhaustion in my fingers and a reflective mood on fashion, I am quite happy to announce that it’s the end of the autumn-winter 2016 couverage – uff!

Woman in Journey. Prada AW16

_MON0373

“They were dressed, for an adventure – rather than waiting, forlorn, for a long-lost love to return from a voyage, they were the ones doing the travelling” said Miuccia Prada before her autumn-winter 2016 show, when describing her Prada woman.  During the January’s menswear show, it was already clear – the designer addresses her fashion towards the global problem of Meditterean sea migrants, wars and chaos, which touches a majority of the industry’s aspects. To a big extend, you could have foreseen what the main collection will look like after the pre-fall, which was staged during the collection for boys – navy hats and Christopher Chemin’s artworks, named after the French revolutionary calendar, were presented as shirt and skirt prints.

The collection, according to Prada’s show-notes, was dedicated to all women who lived throughout the history – from revolutionary ones, like Rosa Luxemburg, to glamorous icons, like Marilyn Monroe – but it also celebrated the everyday women. Backstage, Prada declared that women simply have more life aspects to deal with than men. After all, they have to be “mothers, lovers, workers, daughters and sisters” – and at the top of that, they are supposed to be beautiful. Beauty was undermined by Miuccia, too, by breaking down the beauty cannons in style – from checked socks, which are often called as asexual by many, to corset belts which unleashed a bit of elusive sex-appeal, but from the other side, touched theturbulent topic of women’s constraint of being always on fleek, on point and flawless. And these useless, decorative charms and mini-diaries worn on necklaces – maybe they symbolically meant the secrets women keep?

PJ Harvey was the backing track of the show, keeping it all even more melancholic and reflective. This collection was a philosophical statement emerging from Miuccia’s head – and the quilted, tweed and artfully embroidered clothes speak the language of women like no other.

Café Marchesi

DSC02734

Let’s praise Miuccia Prada not only for her reality-subverting fashion at Prada and MiuMiu, famous Prada Marfa installation, mind-blowing creation of FondazionePrada, but also for Cafe Marchesi, the newest addition to the visionnaire’s portfolio. Located on Via Montenapoleone, the chicest street of Milan, Miuccia revived the iconic PaticcerieMarchesi into a must-visit spot of every fashion person who is in hurry for the next show. The roots of PasticceriaMarchesi begin in 1824, when a small pastry shop opened inside an elegant 18th century building. The shop quietly evolved in the 1900s when Angelo Marchesi expanded its services to a coffee bar, early evening cocktails and freshly baked pastries, cakes, cookies and candies. The main, sweet aim of this place is still the same – but after the re-opening in 2015, the industry got crowded in here, seeing the Miuccia-selected pastel green silks as wall tapestries and Wes-Anderson-like colour palette delights. If talking of their goods, I confess – I have never, ever eaten a better marzipan cake with strawberries. Additionally, Marchesi is already a sentimental place for me – it’s the place were I had a love affair with coffee. The Marocchino rules.

So Miuccia. Miu Miu Pre-Fall’16

miu-miu-pre-fall-2016-09

Miuccia Prada is the designer, whose signature is so idiosyncratic and specific that you can’t mistake her designs with anybody’s else. Her use of colours, textures and textiles feels always utterly… Miuccia. So no wonder why Miu Miu‘s pre-fall 2016 collection, silently presented in rue Saint Honore store’s second floor, was filled with lace pencil skirts, socks, jewelled velvet pumps and corduroy jackets. It had the classical, Miu Miu girlie chic, which can’t be compared to “ugly beauty” theme which is constantly reinterpreted and channelled at Prada. If talking of shoes, there was the continuation of spring-summer 2016 footwear line, so the romantic and care-free ballerinas, now detailed with embroideries and buckled straps.
